What is a Gorilla Admin?

If you are THE sysadmin where you work, you are.

Some Administrators got the silver spoon treatment. Maybe a degree, or maybe Daddy paid his way through a certification program. He got into IT because he thought it was good, easy money, not because he loved the tech.  These are the guys that say, “I work with computers all day, I don’t want to think about them when I get home.” This is the same guy that collects his pay for being “the Exchange Administrator,” or “the Network Admin” or even, “The Share Point portal guy.” This is the guy that resigns himself to the wisdom of so many in the Industry that say, “you can’t know it all, you have to specialize.”

Then there are the Gorilla Admins. The guys that do it all. Web server? I got it. Cisco router with OSPF off one interface and EIGRP off another two? Bring it on. Mac workstations for the guys in Marketing? I’m the man. Windows 7 with bit locker? Absolutely. VPN server on Red Hat and Media server on Ubuntu? Automated backups with .vbs scripts? Thin clients? iPad integration? Asterisk powered PBX? The world is my oyster. The Gorilla Admin had to claw his way up the hard way. His best teachers were Google, you tube, and e-books downloaded to his nook. He doesn’t just know how it works, he knows why it works. Assembled a lab from spare parts in his garage just so he could build it, break it, and build it again. He doesn’t expect thanks, because he knows no one understands how really hard this stuff is. He takes pride in the fact that anything he touches, “just works.” This guy says, “Maybe you can’t know it all, but I want to.”

And one day, all those loafers up there in the first paragraph are gonna work for him.

If that’s you, or going to be, then this is your site. My goal is to collect all that stuff that you need to do the work of the Gorilla Admin in one place. A how-to for the guy that can’t turn to his left or right and ask the guy next to him what to do or how to do it.

It won’t be pretty. It won’t be organized. But it will be the Gorilla strong down and dirty of what you need when the boss wants it yesterday.
